United Nations of Nature

Our ambition is to elevate the status of Nature at the United Nations by creating the United Nations of Nature. In addition to this, we recognize Rights of Nature as a key global legal movement, instrumental in preserving and restoring the health of Nature for future generations. We seek to amplify and support these initiatives by collaborating with likeminded networks, organizations and individuals, whilst building shared resources and funding for Legal Rights for Nature.

OUR IMMEDIATE GOAL IS TO PASS A RESOLUTION WHICH ESTABLISHES THE FIRST INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED HOLIDAY CELEBRATING NATURE. A ‘DAY FOR NATURE’ INVITES ALL NATIONS OF THE WORLD TO GRANT THEIR CITIZENS A DAY OFF TO SPEND IN NATURE, ENJOY THE BENEFITS IT OFFERS, AND HONOR THE PLANET WE ALL CALL HOME. ‘DAY FOR NATURE’ IS THE FIRST STEP TOWARD OUR GREATER AMBITION TO ELEVATE NATURE AT UNITED NATIONS IN CONVERSATIONS AROUND PEACE, PROSPERITY, AND HUMAN RIGHTS.

We recognize the United Nations was established to promote peace among nations and a stable environment is foremost to not only security, but also our prosperity. Nature is the basis for the flourishing of social, political and economic relations, and its destruction is destruction of our shared humanity. Climate action agreements and sustainable development goals have made significant progress and we believe elevating the status of Nature helps those causes and furthers the ambitions of the United Nations as laid out in its founding charter.

Initiatives we believe could be effective in elevating the status of Nature at the United Nations:

Ratify a day for Nature

The first holiday dedicated to Nature that is observed by every nation of the world, elevating the planet to the same honored position as the sacred ceremonies, wars and independence, and key figures in history that are recognized by nations as reasons to pause and pay tribute.

Recognize Nature in the United Nations charter

An update to the founding charter that recognizes the degradation of the natural environment as a threat to international peace and security and lists the environment along with social and economic imperatives to emphasize the importance of Nature in achieving the objectives of the United Nations.

Create a special envoy for Nature

A Special Envoy for Nature serving as the representative and adviser to the UN Secretary General, gathering and delivering critical information on the state of Nature.

Establish a seat for Nature

A Seat for Nature to establish a voice and vote for Nature within the United Nations General Assembly. The United Nations is the global forum for addressing issues bigger than any one nation, and Nature has no borders. Permanent representation of Nature in the General Assembly builds, supports and carries on the conversation about environment beyond any one conference or council. An official seat at the negotiation table ensures a voice for Nature in shaping the future of our planet.

United Nations of Nature collaborates on initiatives to support the global Rights of Nature movement

THE ‘LEGAL RIGHTS FOR NATURE FUNDERS CIRCLE’ IS DEDICATED TO ADVANCING THE RIGHTS OF NATURE MOVEMENT IN ALL REGIONS OF THE WORLD. IT WORKS WITH GRANTEES TO INSPIRE, PASS, IMPLEMENT, AND ENFORCE A NEW GENERATION OF RIGHTS OF NATURE LAWS. THE FUNDERS CIRCLE EMPHASIZES SUPPORT FOR GRASSROOTS ORGANIZATIONS AND LEADERS. IT ALSO OFFERS TEMPLATE LEGISLATION, LEGAL SUPPORT, AND OTHER RESOURCES.

The Funders Circle aims to give leaders the resources they need to create a new DNA of the legal system that mandates the protection of Nature as a basic right. It also seeks to facilitate giving Nature a formal voice, such as through legal guardianship bodies that directly represent Nature’s rights and interests. All of this work will be rooted in local knowledge and leadership

We call these collective actions the United Nations of Nature.
